Welcome to Swim and Sing!
What is it exactly? The inspiration to create “Swim and Sing” developed from my desire to integrate my skills as a lifelong swimmer, choral singer, and collaborative pianist. I learned to swim early in life from coaches who were former Olympians. I was also fortunate to develop excellent choral singing and piano skills early in life from fantastic mentors and musicians, which continue in my professional work. I feel this lifelong thread of skill and experience is ideal for an exercise class in a pool as a fitness outlet for singers.
Since being in the water creates more resistance, this is an effective aerobic exercise. 30-40 minutes in class will be plenty of time to give you a satisfying workout. Participants should be comfortable in water and have basic swimming skills. In order for everyone to gain the most from this experience, a comfortable class size would be a maximum of 10 people, who live in the greater Philadelphia area.
What happens next? Once a convenient date & time have been established, I’ll rent the pool in a Philadelphia suburb from Swimply.com, where hosts offer their private pools for swim rental. Once the swim class has ended, everyone will have a break, then gather soon after for an informal voice class at my home, where I have a good piano and a cat (address and directions will be given at the end of swim class). Singers will be encouraged to sing a song they’re comfortable singing for the group. I’ll offer helpful guidance and support. Then, anyone who’d like to, can share how the swim exercises help improve breath control and fitness while singing. You’ll all benefit from what others share and be able to contribute your own insights as well from this experience.
